    Experience

For seven years Chip Shields has been working on the ground in N/NE Portland on critical issues like living-wage jobs, public safety, affordable housing, access to health care, and ensuring that our schools have the revenue needed to keep class sizes small. He wants to take that experience to Salem to fight for fairness and to improve the lives of every resident of District 43.

Five years ago, Chip Shields started Better People, a Northeast Portland living-wage job placement and counseling program focused on helping people who had been in trouble with the law. Through Better People, Chip has created and filled hundreds of living-wage jobs for people trying to turn their lives around. That's why Chip was awarded the Skanner Newspaper's prestigious Drum Major for Justice Award at the paper's Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast for 2004.

Delivering Real Results for N/NE Portland

It was Chip Shields who first revived the idea of increasing Oregon's Minimum Wage two years ago, helping more than 100,000 low-wage Oregonians receive a raise each and every year. For his work on this critical issue, Chip received the AFL-CIO's "Hero of Labor" Award in 2003.

Chip devoted his time and energy to passing the Multnomah County school levy in 2003, helping protect local schools from the devastating cuts other districts are facing today.

Through his work with the Irvington covenant Community Development Corporation, Chip is helping to create new affordable housing opportunities for families in District 43.

These are among the reasons why Chip is proudly endorsed by:

State Senator Avel Gordly, the Portland Association of Teachers - Teachers Voice in Politics, American Federation of Teachers-Oregon, Oregon League of Conservation Voters, Oregon Natural Resources Council, Oregon Nurses Association, Oregon AFL-CIO, AFSCME Council 75, Governor Barbara Roberts, Metro President David Bragdon, Oregon Labor Commissioner Dan Gardner, State Representative Diane Rosenbaum, Portland City Commissioner Erik Sten, Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder, Former State Representative Jo Ann Bowman, and many others.

When it comes to fighting for jobs and families, Chip Shields has already been leading the way. Chip Shields won't just hit the ground running when he gets to Salem, he'll be leading the charge for safety, education, jobs, and justice.
