Rep. Shields steers small business bill to easy passage
Salem, Ore. May 10, 2007 - State Representative Chip Shields (D-N/NE Portland) carried HB 2783-A to an easy 55-1 passage in the Oregon House of Representatives on May 9th.
HB 2783-A extends the window for renewal, non-renewal and cancellation of workers' compensation insurance policies from 30 to 45 days. If the bill becomes law, it would give business owners 15 more days under their current policy if an insurance company chooses not to renew it, or if it renews at higher rates.
Rep. Shields said that moving the notice window from 30 to 45 days is a modest yet significant increase to make life just a little bit easier for Oregon businesses. This is particularly true for the small businessperson, who often must drop everything to search for a new insurance company if the current policy is dropped or if rates are dramatically increased.
"This bill gives that business owner a little more breathing room," said Shields. "I am happy that the House has given Oregon's business owners a little help today, and I will continue to work to make sure this bill becomes law."
HB 2783-A now moves to the Oregon Senate for consideration.
Shields said this bipartisan bill builds off a similar advance made last legislative session through
HB 2719 , which expanded the renewal window from 30 to 45 days for general liability policies.
